Monday Musing

WHAT ARE YOU READING RIGHT NOW?– I’m reading 3 books. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue monk Kidd, Going Down South by Bonnie Glover, Taste by B. Sharise Moore.

WHY ARE YOU READING WHAT YOU’RE READING? PLEASURE? FOR REVIEW? SOMETHING ELSE?– The first 2 are for pleasure as well as for a book club discussion. The last one is for a review.

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?– Let The Church Say Amen by ReShonda Tate Billingsley.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL BE READING NEXT?– Sherri’s Song by Tonie J. Short.

WHAT WAS THE BEST BOOK YOU READ THIS MONTH? WHY?– Rhythms of Grace by Marilynn Griffith. See my review here.

WHAT WAS THE WORST BOOK YOU READ THIS MONTH? WHY? Memories Vision by Ken Coleman. See my review here.

Friday Fill-in #1

Yasmin from APOOO, IMO, is addicted to meme. I give her credit for finding really interesting ones to do. To check her Friday Fill-in out click here.

If you want to play along with the addicts, copy and paste into your own blog or do them right here in the comments. If you do it in your blog let a sistah know so she can show you some love.

1. __________ are some of the things I’m most looking forward to in October.

2. Sometimes I __________.

3. __________ and that’s why there is a saying, “never say never”!

4. When I’m down, I __________.

5. __________ is where you’ll find me most often.

6. A rainy day is good for __________.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to __________, tomorrow my plans include __________ and Sunday, I want to __________!

Here are my solutions:

1. The leaves changing colors and my husbands 33rd birthday are some of the things I’m most looking forward to in October.

2. Sometimes I just want to be left alone; no books, no music, no cells and definitely no people.

3. Situations in life may arise where you have to go against something you believe in with all your heart, but it in your best interest to do so, and that’s why there is a saying, “never say never.”

4. When I’m down, I will eat and eat and eat some more until I feel better.

5. Sitting at my desk is where you’ll find me most often.

6. A rainy day is good for reading, writing and deep thinking.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to watching the programs on my TIVO, tomorrow my plans include going to a writers group as a guest writer to learning some things on re-writing my manuscript, and Sunday I want to read and relax.

There you have it, now it’s your turn.

Thursday Thirteen #8-Things I Want to Do

Photobucket

I started a different T13 for this week, but didn’t have time to finish it because it is just that tedious. Hopefully I can finish it for next week.

For this week I decide to steal a topic that momma blogs a lot used. She did 10 things I’d like to do this fall. I tweaked it a little. 13 things I want to do by years end.

1. Have my pain under control. I’m seeing a physical therapist for an injury I had back in 2000.

2. Be off of the medication I am taking for the above mentioned injury.

3. Receive an “A” in all three of my classes.

4. Read at least 10 more books. Bringing my total read books for 2008 to 78.

5. Complete the edits on my manuscript that my editor sent me back last night.

6. Begin submitting the above mentioned manuscript to publishers.

7. Complete NaNo WriMo at the finish line with 50,000 plus words. Which means I need to finish another manuscript or get it at least to 50,000 words.

8. Turn 31 on my next birthday. I guess that’s cheating because unless God calls me home I will be 31 on my next birthday.

9. Pick an exercise to do and start doing it.

10. Begin locking my hair for the second time. Yes I had locs for a few years, but I cut them off in 2005.

11. Become more organized. This is so I can fit more things into one day.

12. Find some new vegetables to give my children to eat. Currently they eat spinach, green beans, lima beans, corn, and broccoli.

13. Continue to enjoy the life that I have.

Male Authors

Back in the late 90s when I realized their were more African American authors other than Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Langston Hughes, and Alice Walker, I began reading a lot of male authors.

The ones I found were Michael Baisden, Eric Jerome Dickey, E. Lynn Harris and Omar Tyree. I couldn’t get enough of their stuff. My bookcase will testify on my behalf.

Here of late I really haven’t been reading too many male authors. If the books aren’t for review purposes I don’t willingly pick up male authored books. I wonder if it’s my preconceived notion that men authors are writing about drugs, gangs, jails, and drive-bys? Or is it the infamous need to have soft or sometimes hard porn on paper?

I’m not certain what it is at the moment, but it doesn’t matter. Yesterday, APOOO’s founder Yasmin Coleman did a BTR interview with Dwayne S. Joseph. He was talking about his latest release Home Wrecker, and he had me intrigued. I wanted to read about the characters that he hate to let go of. One of the things he said was that he don’t do sequels, but he may have to because of a character by the name of Lisette.

I’ve decided to purchase the book and give Dwayne a chance.

What say you? Have you read Home Wrecker? Would you give it a thumbs up or thumbs down? While your here recommend some other male authors and their books. I may just blog about it.

Over Achiever

Is it wrong for me to strive for greatness? I expect nothing less from my children, so why shouldn’t i set that type of example? Does that really make me an over achiever?

If it does then I am happy and proud to wear the crown. Yesterday my learning members were unprepared for our meeting and because I had all my ducks in a row, I was considered to be an over achiever. I don’t know about them, but I have always received good grades in school. I don’t know anything different and if part of my grades is based off of team work then we need to all be on the same page. I don’t want their laziness and mediocre work to affect my more efficient way of thinking.

IMO they are the ones that will look bad, because of the quality work I am putting out. So if you are an over achiever like myself, stand up and be proud.
